Replacing Vista with XP!
Downgrading From Vista To XP!!
The First Question of Course is whether your Machine will support it.
Every Machine is Different and the Problem with switching Operting Systems is whether or not you can get the correct drivers. Rather than spend hours in Research - Start by contacting the Manufacturer or go online and check their site's Downloads and Support and see if they have drivers for your model that are compatible with XP. Many Manufacturer's have added them on. If not I would do further research before you decide to throw caution to the wind and install XP just because you can't take Vista any longer.
Yes, You can Install Windows XP and everything may seem fine UNTIL ... You try to Perform certain Functions. Drivers are programs that tell your computer how to run a particular function or piece of hardware. They are generally installed on your Machine by the Manufacturer. They are not part of Windows itself, they cannot be because each new program, each piece of hardware has their own drivers that they use to function. The Chip Set on your Motherboard, your sound card, video card, wireless, etc wether they are built in or added-on they all have their own unique driver program that they require in order to function. If you can find the drivers for them that will work with the XP You Are Home Free !
However, In some cases those programs (drivers) were never written - They simply do not Exist! In other cases you may be able to find drivers from other machines or similiar products that will work- it's long, hard and fustrating but it can and has been done!
Start with the basics, protect your current software. There are a few different ways you may do this:
1) If another hard drive is available you may swap them out, thus leaving you with the original just in case.
2) Another solution is to purchase Imaging Software and make a complete backup by following their instructions. Be sure to read the requirements as you may need a CD, DVD, internal or external hard drive depending on the Imaging Software you choose to use.
3) Many newer laptops and desktops have Restore Petitions, if yours does then you may use that as your back up. Erase the primary petition ONLY leaving the Restore Petition just as it is.
If all Else Fails My Sugggestion is GO With Linux -It's a Great Operating System that has been highly overlooked by most -is Completely Free- Has Thousands of Useful programs from Video, to Art, to Office Programs that are all 100% FREE and always have been. In Fact, I do believe that you will start to see Linux take over Microsofts top spot for Software and none to soon in my opinion. Besides how can you beat FREE?
If you're manufaturer does not have the drivers and you are willing to do some research, you may find the drivers you need on free computer advise and chat pages. Many of them have the full list of drivers needed for a particular machine. These sites are free and are used to exchange information and ideas. If you do use one of these; be sure to return the favor and report your findings on the site for other users.
